Exercise Daily: The importance of exercise cannot be overemphasized. It helps the body to reduce high blood pressure, to prevent obesity, to reduce excessive fat, and to ward off any potential heart disease. More importantly, when you do exercise, the brain releases two chemicals – endorphin and serotonin- that not only makes you happy but also reduces any stress around your body system.
Eat Balanced Diet: Just as we need regular supply of oxygen to survive, we also need consistent healthy diet to overcome depression. The brain need steady supply of glucose in order to function at optimal capacity. Several researches have also shown that, there is an insufficient supply of omega-3 fatty acids in the bodies of most people suffering from depression. These ingredients assist the brain to function efficiently, as well as reduce depression. Given that foods such as eggs and fish contain enormous amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, it is advisable that you should eat them to accelerate your healing process.
Get A Good Sleep: Undoubtedly, nature cannot be cheated. The more you sleep, the more you sharpen your cognitive system. However, if you sleep less than 6 hours in a day, your brain may not be able to function properly, leading to improper judgement and impaired thoughts. Try to budget a minimum of 8 hours for sleeping; you can sleep for 2 hours in the afternoon and use the remaining hours to sleep in the night. Though trying to sleep when you are in a depressive mood can be very difficult sometimes, you can achieve some significant progress by getting rid of potential sources of distractions such as TV, radio, laptop, and the like.
Engage In New Activities: When you are depressed, virtually everything you had once loved now becomes so boring. Your favourite food becomes as tasteless as water. You often view everything around you through the prism of disgust and despair. But you can change this mood simply by trying something different, by doing something you had always loved but never had time to learn. You can use the depressive period to learn new hobbies: reading your favourite books, meeting new friends, or traveling to any country that piques your curiosity, amongst others.
Change Your Negative Thoughts: During the depressive mood, you tend to direct most of your thoughts towards your shortcomings. You believe that you are worthless, that you are not progressing, and that everything was your fault. On the contrary, that is not true. You must recognize that those streams of thoughts lurking around your mind are nothing but a pernicious trick. You have the power to believe them or refute them. It is advisable to write down the negative thoughts on a jotter. Then focus on the solution, not the problem. If you are not sure about the solution to your problem, consult a psychologist or discuss the issue with your confidant.
