  • Trans fats, or trans fatty acids, are a form of unsaturated fat. Unsaturated fatty acids are classified to monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids .
  • Most of these trans fats are created in an industrial process when oil goes through a process called hydrogenation (the conversion of unsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids). This hydrogenated oil is less likely to spoil, so foods made with it have a longer shelf life. Hydrogenated oil is found in a variety of baked food products such as biscuits, cake, salty toast, processed meat and some types of cheese .
  • Margarine, a common product that can contain trans fatty acids. Trans fat is considered as the worst type of fat you can eat. Unlike other dietary fats, it raises your LDL "bad" cholesterol and lowers your HDL "good" cholesterol which may increase your risk of heart and cardiovascular diseases.
  • Try to avoid margarine and replace it with olive oil or corn oil.
